'Intoxicated' man drowns in canal

Witnesses thought he swam home when he didn't surface, police say

By Lourdes Briz
FLORIDA TODAY

MELBOURNE -- A 43-year-old man who police said went out for a night of drinking and fishing was found dead early Sunday at the bottom of a murky canal.

An autopsy is scheduled today for Dale Waybright, who apparently drowned in a canal on Croton Road Saturday , police said.

Waybright, of Melbourne, was fishing between 7 and 8 p.m. when witnesses saw him fall into the water near the 1600 block of Croton Road, according to a police report.

"He was intoxicated," said Agent Lou Heyn of the Brevard County Sheriff's Office. He added police found Old Milwaukee and Budweiser beer bottles at the scene.

When Waybright did not return to the surface, two men jumped in the water but could not find him, police said.

"Everyone that was out there was pretty drunk," Heyn said.

Hours later, when Waybright hadn't surfaced, witnesses called police.

"They thought he had swam home," Heyn said. "They said he had done that before."

It took the dive team about 15 minutes to find Waybright's body at the bottom of the 5-foot-deep canal. He was pronounced dead at 1:24 a.m.

"He had been dressed in shorts and a T-shirt," Heyn said.

The Sheriff's Office is investigating the incident.

Residents, including children, often fish in the canal.

"They really go out there to drink, fish and hang out," Heyn said. "There's a discount beverage store nearby."

OSLO (Reuters) - A Norwegian has accidentally shot and wounded six of his friends at a surprise party to celebrate his 40th birthday, police say.

The man found out about the party in a forest cabin in south Norway beforehand and hid behind trees nearby with a shotgun as about 30 guests turned up on Saturday night, hoping to turn the surprise on his friends,

He blasted off one round in the air, meaning it as a joke to shock the partygoers. But when he came out from his hiding place, he tripped and the gun went off again, badly hurting one woman in the legs and slightly injuring five others.

"Seven people were taken to hospital in Fredrikstad including the man who shot. He wasn't physically hurt but in deep shock," a police spokesman said on Sunday.

The party was cancelled.

PITTSBURGH-August 13, 2003 — Two teens who drove around Pittsburgh shooting passers-by with paintball guns were shot with real bullets for apparently targeting the wrong group, police said.

Tracey Smedley, 19, was treated at UPMC Presbyterian hospital's emergency room and released Tuesday, said spokeswoman Jocelyn Uhl. She could not provide a condition for an unidentified 17-year-old.

Smedley, the 17-year-old and an 18-year-old man drove around a city neighborhood armed with paintball guns and wearing helmets and paintball vests, Pittsburgh police Lt. Philip Dacey said.

During their drive, the teens pelted children at a playground and shot at another group down the street, Dacey said.

When the teens turned around to tell the group on the street they were only shooting paintballs, someone returned fire with a gun, peppering the driver's side of the car with more than a dozen bullets, Dacey said.

Smedley was shot in the left arm, while the 17-year-old was hit in the buttocks. The teens then drove themselves to the hospital, Dacey said

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Play with fire, and you are apt to get burned.

A North Carolina man who's a self-described fire-breather is hospitalized with burns to his face and throat. He's in in serious condition.

Police say Walter McKinney had been drinking with neighbors and was showing them pictures of his fire-breathing act. He decided to do a demonstration and poured lighter fluid into his mouth.

He then reportedly put a burning stick up to his face - and his face caught fire.

One neighbor says he helped extinguish the fire with some beer - saying it was the only thing close at hand.

Police are considering charges against McKinney and will decide once he's out of the hospital.

NEW YORK - An Air France co-pilot was in police custody Saturday after allegedly telling a security screener at John F. Kennedy International Airport that he had a bomb in his shoe.

Philippe Rivere, 50, was arrested moments after Friday's 9:30 p.m. alleged incident, said Port Authority spokesman Tony Ciavolella. Rivere faces charges of falsely reporting an incident in the first and second degree. The top charge, a felony, carries a maximum prison term of seven years.

Rivere, who was to co-pilot Air France Flight 9 from JFK to Paris, was going through the security checkpoint in Terminal One when he allegedly said he had a bomb in his shoe, Ciavolella said. Ciavolella would not say whether Rivere was joking or not.

Port Authority police immediately took Rivere into custody. After examining his shoes, they determined that he did not have explosives, Ciavolella said.

The Air France plane was also searched, and Flight 9, which was supposed to leave JFK at 11 p.m. Friday, was canceled. The flight left the airport Saturday shortly after 10 a.m. Rivere was taken to central booking in the Kew Gardens section of Queens at 1 a.m. and remained in custody awaiting arraignment Saturday afternoon.

Jim Faulkner, an Air France spokesman, said the airline was extremely sorry for the inconvenience to the 300-plus passengers scheduled to take Flight 9. The flight had to be canceled Friday because the airline did not have another co-pilot available, Faulkner said.

Gillette man lights self on fire to ward away officers

Associated Press

GILLETTE — A 27-year-old man was arrested after allegedly striking and threatening a woman and then lighting himself on fire to keep police away, authorities said.

Gregory Phillip Hitt, of Gillette, was arrested Sunday, Police Chief Ric Paul said.

Police had responded to a report of a man threatening to kill a woman with a hammer and crowbar, Paul said. The suspect had also apparently hit the woman with a rock and had damaged a residence, the chief said.

When police arrived, they found Hitt had allegedly crawled under a car and punctured the gas line with a pocket knife, causing fuel to soak into his clothes.

The man told police to stay away or he would start the car on fire, Paul said, then he ignited his clothes with a cigarette lighter.

Police immediately pulled him from under the car, rolled him on the ground and extinguished the flames.

Hitt was arrested on suspicion of aggravated assault and battery, third-degree arson and possession of methamphetamine.

Thieves Make Off With Calif. Man's House
10-By-20-Foot Rural Second Home Disassembled, Taken Away

POSTED: 12:22 a.m. EDT August 3, 2003
BERKELEY, Calif. -- Thieves did more than just break into B.J. Miller's tiny 10-by-20-foot rural home and make off with a few precious items. They took the whole house.

Authorities say it probably took thieves at least a day to take apart Miller's small prefabricated home outside San Francisco. Its well pump and generator also vanished.

Miller lives in Berkeley, and the retired engineer was setting up the home over the past few months as a small vacation getaway place for his family.

He has put up a few posters with photos of the home, hoping someone will tip him off if the thieves try to sell the goods.

Permit for Kiddie Pool?

EBENSBURG, PA-August 3, 2003 — Cindy Lenz purchased an inflatable vinyl pool for about $50 so her family could cool off. Instead, she's steamed because a government agency says she needs a building permit or she could be fined.

Click Here for More WPVI.com Bizarre News
Ben Grush, a building inspector for the Cambria-Somerset Council of Governments, which handles zoning for Ebensburg and other municipalities, said inflatable pools have been creating problems.

"Last year, pools like this started popping up all over the place. Some are 36 inches deep, some less. In most jurisdictions, they would be required to be fenced," Grush said.

The Lenz pool is 18 inches deep. Ebensburg's zoning law says that pools deeper than that must be fenced to protect against children falling in.

Grush said the agency is just doing its job. "If a toddler drowns and we haven't done our jobs, we're in between and get the blame," he said.

The Lenzes said they would appeal.

"Who would think that you would need government permission to buy a $49 inflatable at Wal-Mart and put it in your driveway?" said Edward Lenz, Cindy's husband.

Dog gives flasher his come-uppance
Fri 1 August, 2003 11:15 BST

ZAGREB (Reuters) - A drunken Croat flasher got more excitement than he bargained for when he pushed his penis through a woman's fence and her dog bit it, local newspapers have reported.

The visibly drunk man was walking down the street and started swearing and shouting at the woman for no reason. He then shoved his penis through her fence, unaware her dog Medo (Little Bear) was on the other side, police said.

The bitten man himself reported the incident to the police.

The 36-year-old was taken to hospital with light injuries but later sent home. He will be charged with "insulting the moral feelings of citizens" and "violation of public order".

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (Reuters) - Supermarket cashiers in Argentina are being forced to wear diapers to keep them from taking toilet breaks at work, a union says Female cashiers in western Mendoza province must wear adult diapers in case "cold, nerves, pressure or stress" provoke incontinence, union official Jorge Cordova told local news agency Diarios y Noticias on Thursday.

Cordova refused to name the supermarket, but he did say the chain is backed by foreign capital, said Sandra Varela, Mendoza's labor subsecretary.

"The truth is, it's difficult to imagine a line of 20 adult cashiers wearing diapers for eight hours," said Varela, who is investigating the matter.

"In seventeen years as a labor lawyer, I've never heard anything like this before," she added.

Busy Days
06.25.03 (9:31 pm)   [edit]
Well it has been a number of days since I have stopped in here and put into writing what have been doing with my life. Last thursday I went to see Neil Young and Crazy Horse, not the show that I expected but it was interesting. He did this kinda' rock opera thing, with all of these people acting out songs from a disk called Greendale about a fictional town. Interesting but not the rock and roll crazy horse show I expected although they did finish up with about 6 rockin' numbers at the end.

My Mom went home from the hospital on friday, sounds like things are getting better very slow but the key is she is getting better. I mainly just worked painting my house over the weekend, nothing exciting.

I just got done working for about four hours setting up Brenda's new computer which has been giving me trouble for several days. I finally gave up and have to figure that there is some sort of hardware problem, I will call and mess with this thing tomorrow. I also bought warcraft 3 so I may have to set that up and see how it runs on my machine.

Cat Scratch Fever
06.16.03 (9:50 pm)   [edit]
Well today seemed to be going along at a good pace today. I went and saw Jenny about my shoulder not working correctly and she gave me a pretty good explanation as to what is causing it and some exercises to do to try and make it better. I will work on it and see if she is right. Work went well, we had a meeting on the 277 Volt issue so at least someone is looking at it.

After work I stopped up to see my Mom and she was doing great, she ate some toast and ice cream and her white blood cell count is up to 10 which is great. she seemed in much better spirits today than any day so far. Then I came home to get in a little painting, and Paul and Tobi stopped by to get the rug. THey ended up hanging out for some time then all of the sudden there was a large racket in the kitchen so Brenda went in to see what was going on and it seems our cat was fighting thru the screen with another cat and as Brenda got behind him whe startled Cletus and he attacked her foot and ankle and turned it into hamburger. He just lost his mind and went crazy I grabbed him and locked him in a room so he would not attack any one else. We know he did not mean it but something like that will scare the pants off of you.

As I look at him now he seems to know that he was wrong and seems just a little freaked out yet as is everyone who was here.

Father's Day
06.15.03 (8:46 pm)   [edit]
Well this weekend we all went up to La Crosse to get to get together with aunt Barb and cousin Jimmy. It was a really good time, all of the kids had a blast in the pool and seing the animals at the park. Aunt Barb seemed on top of her game she is still as sharp as a tack but she is having some problems with her body and parkinsons setting in. Jimmy is his crazy self, although things did seem a little quiet at times. We all missed my mother but the good new is that my Dad got the present that he wanted. My Mom felt better and her white blood cell count went up by a significant number in just one day, so everything is now looking much better for her. Let's hope this is the last of it, she is a tuff woman but I don't know how much more she can take.

Well all in all a great weekend, lots of fun.

All I can do is keep showing up and showing my opposition. Also my monitor died, I got home and it ws just a bunch of swigley lines, so I went down to Best Buy to get a new one, and the one I liked was not in stock. So we went over to Circuit City and they had a nice one on sale for $50 less so I bought that one.......

Seems to be working fine.

Visit My MOM
06.03.03 (9:15 pm)   [edit]
Well my Mother is in the University Hospital, she got there yesterday but I waited til today to stop up and see her. She seems to be doing fine, she was tired tonight as she did not sleep well last night so me father and I went out for a few drinks at the Blue Mon Saloon, which was kind of an odd place with a nice decor. Lots of neon and a small bar but it seemed like more of a dinner joint than a bar to me.

My MOM will be here for a couple of weeks at least and I plan to visit her as much as I can. I missed a couple of days her so I will give you a quick run down:

Saturday Night Brenda and I went out on the boat with Ginger, Patrick, Tom and his date, Brenda and myself is was cold but we just went and had dinner on Lake Kegonsa and rode back to patricks house.

Sunday I got up and did a bunch of work on my house, some wood work and taring but I also primed a bunch of the siding n the corner by the door.

On Monday I talked with my Dad and everything was fine at the Hospital so I decided not to stop by but to got to Menards and get some wood. I came home and painted som eof the screen trim with primmer in preperation for painting.

Well nothing else is new....I Love Brenda
